Quick Guide to Chippewa National Forest

Northern Minnesota is home to some of the most beautiful countryside in the lower 48 states, although we may be a little biased. Sprawling landscapes of beautiful trees and pristine lakes make up most of the area, allowing visitors to truly experience the great outdoors the way they want to.

One such national forest in Minnesota is right by our location: Chippewa National Forest

Chippewa National Forest was the first national forest established east of the Mississippi. Ever since it was established in 1908, it has been enchanting visitors from all over the country.

How Big is Chippewa National Forest?

The forest area is roughly 1.6 million acres, although only 660,000 acres are managed by the National Forest. Chippewa contains more than:

  • 1300 lakes
  • 925 miles of streams
  • 400,000 acres of wetlands

Can You Hunt in Chippewa National Forest?

This national forest is a popular area for hunters of all kinds. The main types of hunting in this area include:

  • Deer
  • Waterfowl (grouse, duck, etc.)
  • Bear

While the seasons for each vary, you’ll find hunters here starting in September.

Things to Do in Chippewa National Forest

With such a large area, visitors will find that there are a vast amount of outdoor activities available for the entire family.

Hiking and Biking

Traversing one of the many paths winding through Chippewa is one of the best ways to experience the forest, whether you’re backpacking, day hiking, or even skiing. With over 298 miles of non-motorized trails, visitors will find paths that accommodate every challenge level you’re looking for.

While mountain bikes work fine on the non-motorized trails, You’ll also find that there are a number of paved trails that are perfect for a relaxing bike ride.

Fishing

There are plenty of places to fish in Chippewa National Forest with many fishing piers scattered throughout. The most common type of fish you’ll find here are:

  • Perch
  • Walleye
  • Northern pike
  • Bass
  • Muskellunge
  • Trout

Activities for Children

The Junior Forest Service Naturalist program provides a number of documents and worksheets that are designed to help educate children while also getting them excited about being in the great outdoors. From scavenger hunts to tips on identifying wildlife, these worksheets can help children have a blast in the forest.

Beaches and Swimming

Chippewa National Forest contains three of the biggest lakes in Minnesota: Cass Lake; Leech Lake; and Lake Winnibigoshish. Each of these lakes have well kept beaches that allow for unparalleled and safe swimming opportunities. Perhaps the best area for swimming is in the Norway Beach Recreation Area, which contains a picnic shelter, visitor center, and multiple trails nearby. You’ll also find public showers nearby, which is helpful since swimmers itch often occurs during the summer.
